This bi-weekly course introduces students to the basic concepts and texts surrounding the therapeutic application of superstitions, folklore, and amateur occultism. Diverse cross-cultural examples of key phenomenon will be used, ranging from practices of ancestor worship to sin eating, astrology to pilgrimages. The course culminates with the final, challenging, question: if superstition’s psychosomatic benefits can be sufficiently significant (utilized properly), can we be sure that all forms of medicine are not, ultimately, a form of properly applied superstitions?
